Applied Contemplative Studies is an interdisciplinary field that integrates contemplative practice, contemplative science, and contemplative education. Its aim is to investigate the mind and reveal the nature of self whilst supporting the integration of the resulting insights.

The Three Pillars of Applied Contemplative Studies

The following definitions establish the scope and application of these terms within the framework of this project

Contemplative Practice

Refers to psycho-spiritual technologies and methods for developing presence, discernment, compassion, awareness, wisdom, and direct experiential inquiry into the fundamental nature of experience.

Contemplative Science

Refers to the interdisciplinary methods used to systematically investigate the mechanisms, processes, outcomes, and transformative potential of contemplative states and traits.

Contemplative Education

Refers to an embodied pedagogy that applies first-person contemplative inquiry to the study of wisdom traditions, psychology, and comparative philosophy, supporting embodied understanding of the subject.
